Policy on Student Evaluations of Courses and Teaching introduced

Provost Advisory Committee on Teaching and Learning (PACTL) develops a suggested Policy on Use of Teaching Dossiers in Faculty Evaluation & University-Wide Instrument for Student Evaluation of Teachers and Courses

Winter, 1995 - Spring, 1996

Western's Strategic Plan recommends university-wide course and teaching evaluations

"Leadership in Learning" recommended that the Provost oversee the development of a "university-wide course/instructor evaluation comprised of roughly ten standard items." Data from the evaluations should made available to the Western community and combined with teaching dossiers to inform Promotions & Tenure and hiring decisions

1995

Senate approves PACTL's Policy on University-Wide Instrument for Student Evaluation of Teachers and Courses

Minor amendments from the original policy are made

June, 1996

First university-wide implementation of questionnaire on course and teaching

Fall, 1996

Questionnaire on Courses and Teaching undergoes initial review

The Provost's Advisory Committee on Teaching and Learning submits their Review of the New University-Wide Teaching Evaluation Form report.

1998

Faculty Collective Agreement Letter of Understanding to review student evaluation of teaching practices and policies

The Letter of Understanding states that a sub-committee of the Joint Committee will be appointed to:

  • Review the current questionnaire for design and underpinning philosophy
  • Recommend questionnaire revisions, if any

2006

Joint Subcommittee on Student Evaluations of Teaching submits its Final Report to Senate

Faculty Collective Agreement Letter of Understanding to review Joint Working Group's 2008 Final Report for implementation

A Joint Working Group is appointed to undertake the review of the 2008 document, particularly as it relates to the 2012 Auditor General of Ontario report on University Undergraduate Teaching Quality

2014

The Joint Working Group on Student Questionnaire on Courses and Teaching, appointed to review the implementation of recommendations in the Joint Subcommittee's 2008 Final Report, submits its report to senate

Key report recommendations were:

  • Immediately implement the recommendations from the 2008 Final Report of the Joint Working Group on Student Evaluations of Teaching
  • Develop an online method of administering course questionnaires for all course types and clearly communicate administration procedures to administrators, faculty, and students
  • Review the current questionnaire and develop a process to add faculty-based questions
  • Develop reporting procedures that support comparative data analysis
  • Draw on the Teaching Support Centre expertise to provide support implementing report recommendations
